Survivor: Racism and Misogyny

I used to love Survivor. I was a glued to my seat watcher for years. Until the networks became pay to play and I no longer had access to the show.

Recently I subscribed to Paramount Plus because I wanted to have access to all the Star Trek shows and I wanted to check out Matlock. And there was Survivor.

I was thrilled. I decided to start watching the first season they filmed during the pandemic. What a choice. That season was fine but the following season the shit hit the fan. There were a number of black players and the first time on Survivor the black players decided to team up.

And they imploded. And then got picked off. And then some real talk started happening. And the absolute patriarchal undertone of the show came to light (at least for me, smarter people probably recognized this long ago).

Survivor begins as teams. The teams compete, one team loses the competition and they go to Tribal Council where someone gets voted off the island. And it goes that way until the tribes merge and people play as individuals and start picking people off.

And the pecking order becomes the same every time. The first to go are the black women. Constantly. The white women and black men are fine with that. Then when there are no more black women they kick out the young women. When the tribes merge then they continue to target the younger women and the younger black men. Then the older women and older black men.

Do some people survive this? Of course. Some players find ways to stay. A black woman can (and has) won. But watch the damn shows as a binge and the patterns suddenly scream out.

And I found that I can't watch the show because I hate it now. Survivor is America in a nutshell. Racist, sexist, obvious and mean.

  1. And people wonder why I don't watch reality tv. Seriously...

It all seems so fake and then, as you say, they have crap like this happening. My life is a shit show at the moment, I don't need to be watching stuff like this as well. I can't even stomach the ads for these shows, where they more or less reveal the whole season in 30 second increments lol. You know the ones - I'm doing this for my father's brother's cat's homeless horse mother's sister-in-law. They all have a sob story (some of which I'm sure are legit) but honestly, if you have to use it to try and win votes/sympathy, rather than the talents that got you selected for the show, what's the point?

It's supposed to be 'reality' but it all seems so scripted to me - the villian, the hero, the one everyone loves until they don't. Life's too short for that shit. But having said all that, I guess the closest I can come to reality is watching the Great British Bakeoff (and the Aussie, Kiwi and Canadian spin offs). At least there, the contestants like and help each other, rather than find new and interesting ways to be a dick and have them 'voted off the island' lol.

Oh, by the way - did you find and like Matlock? I love Kathy Bates and can't wait for season two to be released. I've always been a fan of lawyer shows and she does an excellent job. :D

Sorry if I didn't stick to the theme here. You know me... LOL

MWAH - hugs to you and all the ladies.

    1. Love you always Lea. And I know you hate reality TV. I like it. Sometimes you really do see goodness and genuine connections. And sometimes people are quite clever in their gameplay and that can be fun to watch.
I only watched the Matlock pilot so far and it was great. I just watched Squid Game and of course there's The Ultimatum, Queer Version on the list.
You would hate everything I watch. Hahahahaha

    2. No doubt lol. I finally finished Blacklist and into season 9 of CSI. Also have a couple of seasons left of Hawaii Five-O, which I watch to feel closer to you lol. I do like cop/lawyer shows mostly but will give other stuff a once-over if it looks interesting enough. Take The Boys, for instance... But anyway. I'm sure we'll find something we can both enjoy at some point. Maybe lol

  2. I haven't ever watched the show (but then, I don't watch any reality tv), but I am sorry something you love is no longer a source of joy, Lori.

I hope you get to enjoy all the Star Treks, and Matlock (Katie Bates is such an incredible actress)
