Dirty: A Dive Bar Novel by Kylie Scott

I've pretty much enjoyed all of Kylie Scott's books, some more than others. Play, Mal and Anne's story tops the list. But, I have to say, Dirty is right up there with Play in reading enjoyment.

Here, have a blurb:

Love—on the rocks….
The last thing Vaughan Hewson expects to find when he returns to his childhood home is a broken hearted bride in his shower, let alone the drama and chaos that come with her.
Lydia Green doesn't know whether to scream or cry in a corner. Discovering the love of your life is having an affair on your wedding day is bad enough. Finding out it's with his best man is another thing all together.
Just when this runaway bride has nowhere left to turn, a handsome stranger offers her a broad, muscular shoulder to cry on. Vaughan is the exact opposite of the picture perfect, respected businessmen she's normally drawn to. This former musician-turned-bartender is rough around the edges and is facing his own crossroads. But Lydia's already tried Mr. Right and discovered he's all wrong--maybe it's time to give Mr. Right Now a chance.
After all, what's wrong with getting dirty?
Dirty is the first book in the Dive Bar series from bestselling author Kylie Scott.

                                                                             *****

I read the first couple of chapters with a smile on my face, I know I did, all because of lines like this:

"It's just kind of hard to ignore a penis and scrotum when they're dangling right in front of your face. I tilted my head, trying to get some perspective. Every viewpoint, however, was equally shocking. There was dick as far as the eye could see." (Lydia has been discovered in the tub.)

Lol!

I liked this couple. I liked their personalities, their humor, their appetite for each other. I liked the secondary characters too, even Eric, even though I'm sure they are all sequel fodder. It will hopefully be as much fun reading their romances as it was Lydia's and Vaughan's.

And we got to catch up just a bit with the Stage Dive gang. Mal made a cameo, being his usual crazy self while bringing news of the others.

There's no shoot 'em ups, no deeply tragic angst, no fairy godmothers or life saving alphas in this novel. Just real people (more or less) with life problems that can be solved with a little introspection and a lot of trust. "To thy own self be true" is the quote describing this tale of love and if you can do that, well then, you can love and be true to others.

It's gonna be a great series, I feel it in my bones.

  1. WAs this book on one of your tbr list posts Carolyn? I seem to recall reading that blurb somewhere before...

Does sound interesting so I guess I need to add it to my ever growing list of stuff to get to. At this rate I can build a bridge to somewhere far away with that list. I suppose it's a stand alone but if it mentions other characters, should I start at the beginning?

ps - almost done with Lord of Scoundrels. Comments to come... lol

pps - Umm, side note... Tattoos aren't my thing anyway but if you want one, go for it. I want to know though why it's vitally important now that you get every square inch of your body done? Was a time when one or two was a novelty. Now the novelty is finding someone without one (me, as it turns out lol) or just one or two and they're happy.

  2. No, I hadn't pre-ordered it, Lea. I happened across a review of it and realized who the author was and immediately bought it. It was released April 19.

I think full sleeve and body tattoos are a new art form. Some of them are really beautiful. However, I've never seen them in real life and I myself have never had a tattoo either.

Give me a hint of what you think of LoS - can't be all bad if you're finishing the book, lol.

  3. ARt... yeah, that's it lol. There are quite a few footballers here who have gone the full arms and legs etc, and working on more... thank god they don't play in my team lol

As to LoS. Umm... can I get back to ya?

    :D

  4. I have a bad feeling that Lea is not a LoS fan. Nor a tat fan. Hmmm....

  8. Thanks AL xx

Of course I realize that's not what Carolyn meant lol. Let's just say that I have some thoughts about the book and need a minute to write them down. I will do my best to get onto it asap for y'all :D

  9. Totally random:

Have either of you ladies read this piece on Hillary Clinton by Lena Dunham?

Keeping in mind that I don't watch tv, and that all I know about Dunham is what comes up on the entertainment section of nbcnews, or cnn, or the like, I like that she pointed to what sways me: Hillary has been working for women's rights for decades.

  10. Thanks AL, that was a good read. Makes me want to come up there and vote Hilary too! Fingers crossed sanity prevails and anyone but wigman gets voted in. As an aside, shouldn't someone who's been in politics longer be running, or do y'all just let anyone run? I don't get it but then I'm not political at all so...

As another aside, I kept coming back to the comment in Lena's post about 'misdemeanor domestic violence'. According to Dictionary.com, misdemeanor is "Law. a criminal offense defined as less serious than a felony." I'm sorry but for me, domestic violence should never be considered anything less than a full on major felony. I realize that's not what her article was about but it I kept going back to those three simple words and it made me angry.

Third aside - I had a whole list of what I did and didn't like in LoS but lost it and I'm not up to rewriting it, so here's the Cliff' Notes version...

    * They had me at the Duke being half Italian :D
    * I liked it and would have finished sooner if not for real life.
    * I didn't like that there wasn't more of hte grandmother - she clearly was a lady who knew what she liked and despite the times she was living in, didn't give a shit what anyone thought. Her granddaughter buying her a watch that features a sex act clearly showed that, along with her advice to her GD made me want to hear more from her. Wonder if she could get her own story lol
    * I didn't like that I couldn't just jump into the book and smack a few people upside the head - ie the bad guys, and the H/H as well at times. Seriously, some of them deserved more than a punch.
    * My favourite part was when Dain got the use of his arm back. I had a feeling it was all psychosomatic and thought perhaps once he realized he loved Jessica it would come back. I loved more the idea that his heart melted enough for his son's welfare and that was what worked. Total aww moment, right there :D

I'm sure there were other moments but I can't remember. So, over all, I liked it and thanks for the heads up ladies - well worth the read and now I may possibly find the others in the series.

  12. Can I just say that I'm a staunch democrat and I hate Hillary.

  13. And can I just say, I'm so glad you liked LoS. Everything about that book appealed to me. Sorry I took so long to acknowledge your remark, Lea; I tend to forget threads when they go off page. :-(

IMO, you can't go wrong with Loretta Chase. Try Mr. Impossible, it's my next favorite. I absolutely love Rupert. <3

  14. No worries Carolyn, is all good :D I'll keep an eye out for Ms Chase. Might need to read some romantical stuff after book three in the Game of Thrones set - so bloody thirsty! LOL
